I have always ensured that my urban decay work does not include human characters in an effort to make the viewer think about the scene's history. Often these images show a space that is entirely man-made, and man-ruined. Although we cannot visibly relate to any particular person in these images, personification is still possible, as demonstrated in this image.
The name 'Fred's Discount Store' immediately raises thoughts of families, communities and life - things that no longer exist in this space. In this kind of imagery it is not necessary to include human characters in order to invoke thoughts about them.
